by Jack Lee | Thursday, February 18, 2010
In response to Siobhan Moylan’s article that appeared online on 1 February, criticising the fitness industry’s 8-week qualification courses, Vicki Tuchtan writes this:
My hand is up high and proud Siobhan Moylan, as I am a fitness guru.
And as such, I feel compelled to respond to your recent article surrounding the training of fitness professionals in Australia (Hands up if you’re a fitness guru, 1/2/10). Before we get to that, let me indulge with a brief history of the training system in Australia. ...read more
Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’ SHOCK HORROR
by Alisha Smith | Wednesday, February 10, 2010
“Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’”- I can’t begin to reveal the level of frustration I felt when I read this headline on a news.com.au article this week. The article was referencing a study done in the UK about the effect that genes have on the results obtained by exercising.
In this case, my issue isn’t with the story itself, which is reporting on the findings of a genuine study. The problem is the deliberately misleading headline. ...read more

by Analee Matthews | Tuesday, February 02, 2010
It's back on our boxes. And love it or hate it The Biggest Loser TV show has a potentially massive impact on our industry!
In past blogs, we've discussed whether the show is a pro or con for the
industry, and whether it's offensive or helpful, but these ongoing
debates aside, the bottom line is that there really is a great
opportunity for PTs, clubs and group exercise instructors alike to tap
into the heightened interest that the show creates, and really boost
our business activities.

by Ryan Hogan | Sunday, December 20, 2009
While reading the New York Times Health and Fitness Blog recently, I came across a post by Tara Parker-Pope that really caught my eye, entitled ‘Losing Weight by Photoshop’. The title obviously speaks for itself, and after reading the very well written piece, it reinforced to me how many people in our industry – and of course, how many of our clients and customers – have a negative perception of their body image. ...read more

The following post is written by guest author Danielle Fera, an exercise coach from NSW.
Most personal trainers will at some point have clients who have less than healthy hearts – in fact, that may be why they are training with you. Have you ever considered what you would do if one of your clients suffered a cardiac arrest during a training session? ...read more
Obesity-combating smart-card proposed – but wouldn’t an exercise incentive be more effective?
by Ryan Hogan | Wednesday, September 16, 2009
The following post is written by guest author Paul Richards, CEO of Club Physical in New Zealand.
Thinking positively, I would firstly like to congratulate the NZ Ministry of Health for even considering incentivising people to purchase healthy food in a bid to combat obesity. This is a step in the right direction, but I imagine it would only impact people to a minor degree and not have the desired outcome of improving people’s lifestyle habits enough to reduce obesity. ...read more

by Ryan Hogan | Tuesday, September 08, 2009
Recently myself and a colleague, Amy Bird, were lucky enough to head over to America to a couple of international fitness conventions to get a feel for what is happening overseas in the wide world of fitness. Certainly an eye opening experience, Amy and I identified the following 4 BIG global trends to watch out for, some of which have already hit OZ and some that are sure to come soon: ...read more
In addition to fitness centres, the PPCA now looks to increase music royalties in cafes and restaurants.
by Ryan Hogan | Thursday, August 06, 2009
It appears that the always money hungry PPCA (the organization that represents recording companies and artists in Australia) is not content with increase of fees they are now enjoying from the night club industry, and the potential increase in revenue from the Fitness Industry, they have now decided to attack cafe & restaurant businesses. ...read more

by Ryan Hogan | Tuesday, July 21, 2009
Network’s July eNews takes a look at a varied selection of topics, kicking off with news on a method which has been developed to diagnose overtraining syndrome. Then there’s more research pointing to the mental and physical benefits of an active life in older age. Perhaps taking up ballroom dancing would be a good idea, as research has found that it can add a couple of thousand steps towards your recommended daily total, that hard-to-reach ten thousand steps. ...read more
