Customer service says no – how does the fitness industry measure up?

by Oliver Kitchingman | Monday, August 16, 2010

When I first arrived in Australia ten years ago, I remember being impressed by several incidents of good customer service that I received, and it was not uncommon to hear Aussies singing the praises of the quality customer service that was part and parcel of everyday life in this wide brown land. Either my impressions were some way off the mark and the locals were harking back to a bygone era, or something bad has happened in the past decade, because according to new findings, customer service ain’t what it was – or what it should be.

A recent survey by American Express World Service Australia has found that Australia’s reputation for customer service is languishing in the doldrums – in joint twelfth place with the UK out of twelve countries surveyed (behind the likes of the US, France, Canada, India and Holland).  ...read more

What is the dollar value of a Personal Training session these days?

by Ryan Hogan | Monday, July 19, 2010

Some years ago when I first moved to Sydney, I *gasp* took some time off exercising after having taught classes for more than 10 years. After a few months of getting rather porky and feeling pretty unfit, I decided it was time to make my way back into the health club scene. I promptly joined a local chain of gyms and began working in earnest to lose some of the beer and pie weight accumulated over the previous six months.

After working very hard on my own for a while, I decided to do some research into hiring a personal trainer to help me achieve my fitness goals. By this stage I was already working at Network and being immersed back in the fitness world I was sure that a PT would be just the thing to whip me back into shape. After speaking to the personal training manager at the club I was a member of, I was referred to a trainer who promptly interviewed me and did a very thorough needs analysis. We then moved on to the sample workout which was outstanding.  ...read more

Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’ SHOCK HORROR

by Alisha Smith | Wednesday, February 10, 2010

“Aerobic exercise ‘a waste of time’”- I can’t begin to reveal the level of frustration I felt when I read this headline on a news.com.au article this week. The article was referencing a study done in the UK about the effect that genes have on the results obtained by exercising.
In this case, my issue isn’t with the story itself, which is reporting on the findings of a genuine study. The problem is the deliberately misleading headline.  ...read more

Love it or otherwise, we can use The Biggest Loser to boost our Fitness Businesses

by Analee Matthews | Tuesday, February 02, 2010

It's back on our boxes. And love it or hate it The Biggest Loser TV show has a potentially massive impact on our industry!

In past blogs, we've discussed whether the show is a pro or con for the industry, and whether it's offensive or helpful, but these ongoing debates aside, the bottom line is that there really is a great opportunity for PTs, clubs and group exercise instructors alike to tap into the heightened interest that the show creates, and really boost our business activities.   ...read more

Are you an empty preacher or a great teacher?

by Ryan Hogan | Tuesday, December 29, 2009

The following post is written by Network's Online Trainer Skye Jones.

Before I get my ‘intellectual’ cap on, let me just preface this blog post by saying that I have followed two career paths in my life – one being an artist and visual arts educator with my specific focus being community arts projects, and the other being a fitness professional. I am a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor.  ...read more

Hot topic: Gym Waivers, Client Liability and Duty of Care

by Ryan Hogan | Tuesday, December 08, 2009

In the recent decision of Belna Pty Ltd v Irwin [1], the NSW Court of Appeal considered the duty of care owed by a gym operator to a client who suffered a serious knee injury while performing lunges as part of a program designed by an employee.

Facts
Ms Irwin dislocated her knee while performing lunges at a Fernwood gym. The exercises were part of a prescribed gym program formulated by a consultant of the gym and the incident occurred while Irwin attempted a lunge for the first time. Her leg gave way, she fell to the floor and was then taken to the hospital where it was found that she had dislocated her knee.   ...read more
